Objective: This study aimed to explain the role of strategic agility and its underlying mechanisms in strengthening organizational performance and innovation capacity in Iranian sports organizations.
Methodology: This qualitative study employed thematic analysis. The research population consisted of senior and middle managers of sports organizations and academic experts in sport management. Participants were recruited through purposive and snowball sampling until theoretical saturation was achieved. In total, 25 semi-structured interviews lasting approximately 40–60 minutes were conducted. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed through six stages of thematic analysis: familiarization with the data, generation of initial codes, searching for themes, reviewing and refining themes, defining and naming themes, and producing the final analytical report. The credibility and dependability of the findings were enhanced through participant review of the results and repeated coding of selected interviews.
Findings: The thematic analysis indicated that strategic agility was primarily achieved through rapid and data-driven decision-making, autonomous and multidisciplinary teams, short and continuous review meetings, interdepartmental coordination, and rapid reallocation of financial and human resources. Innovation emerged as a major driver of organizational performance and agility and operated interactively with technology, organizational learning, and interdepartmental coordination. Digital platforms, project-management systems, and data-analytics tools facilitated faster decision-making, reduced dependence on intuitive judgments, and improved anticipation of environmental changes. Continuous feedback, documentation of successful and unsuccessful experiences, and knowledge sharing strengthened organizational learning and flexibility. The simultaneous interaction of strategic agility, innovation, technology, organizational learning, and coordination created a continuous feedback and learning cycle that enhanced organizational responsiveness, productivity, adaptability, and innovation capacity.
Conclusion: Strategic agility can most effectively improve organizational performance and innovation capacity when it is institutionalized in conjunction with innovation, technology, organizational learning, and interdepartmental coordination. Accordingly, sports organizations should develop flexible structures, autonomous teams, data-driven decision-making processes, continuous learning mechanisms, and appropriate technological infrastructures to strengthen their ability to respond rapidly and effectively to dynamic and unpredictable environments.
